Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is a very common chronic hair loss disorder. It is characterized by progressive hair loss, affecting both sexes. It affects up to 80% of men and 40% of women. Its frequency increases with age, despite the fact that it may start at puberty. Independent of age and gender, patients diagnosed with androgenetic alopecia may undergo significant impairment of quality of life, since hair is considered to be an important feature of self-image. Hair loss affects self-esteem, personal attractiveness and may lead even to depression and other negative effects of life, especially in women. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatments have demonstrated success in scientific studies. PRP is defined as a natural concentration of your own body's blood plasma with a greater count of platelets than that of whole blood. Its therapeutic hair growth action depends on the released growth factors from platelets. Studies have demonstrated an increased stem cell growth, increased growth phase of the hair follicle and better blood flow to treated areas. It has been investigated and used in numerous fields of medicine for many years including dentistry, implant surgeries, and orthopedics. Recently, PRP has received growing attention as a potential therapeutic tool for hair loss. PRP injections are effective in the treatment of androgenetic alopecia in both males and females, without remarkable adverse effects. It can be used as part of combination approach for hair loss treatment, including oral finasteride or spironolactone as well as topical minoxidil. Also, it can serve as a standalone treatment by itself. It is a good choice especially for women of childbearing age, who cannot take oral medication such as finasteride, and for any patient with adverse effects and/or no results from oral finasteride or topical minoxidil. In a recent clinical study, patients filled in the satisfaction questionnaire and reported any adverse effects. They were satisfied with a mean result rating of 7.1 on a linear analogue scale of 1-10 (1 = no result, 10 = best result). 85% of patients reported an improvement in hair quality and thickness, while 65% reported an increase in hair density. At month 5, all patients (100%) claimed that they want and/or need the booster session, while, at month 6, 75% of needed them. Another clinical study yielded similar high patient satisfaction. A significant reduction in hair loss was observed between first and fourth injection as noticed by patients. Global pictures also revealed a moderate improvement in hair volume and coverage. Overall, patient satisfaction was high with a mean result rating of 7.0 on a scale of 1-10. During your treatment, a nurse will draw your blood which will then be concentrated in a centrifuge machine that separates the blood components. The PRP is extracted, and using a very fine needle, scalp injections are made into the affected areas of hair loss. Regarding safety profile, it is very safe because PRP is inside your body naturally. The adverse effect profile included mild pain during the injections and scalp sensitivity during first hair wash after treatment injections. This treatment is not covered by insurance. The cost is $599 per treatment every two weeks for 4 treatments for regrowth. We do offer special pricing for a package of 4 treatments at $499 per treatment as a PRP corrective treatment package. Thereafter, a maintenance treatment is recommended every 3-6 months. Every patient's results and ability to regrow hair are different. Treatment is individualized for each patient and patience is required when treating hair loss especially if it is chronic. Our goal with treatment is to grow quickly and then maintain so the cost is reasonable long-term. We have significant expertise in PRP treatments for hair loss.

Platelet Rich Plasma, also known as PRP, is derived from the patient’s own blood. The component of your blood known as platelets are collected and activated, thus leading to liberation of growth factors and healing elements. The activated platelets are then injected within the next few minutes as a medical treatment for rejuvenation. Enzymes are released to promote healing and tissue responses including attracting stem cells and growth factors to repair damaged tissue and cause regeneration and rejuvenation. The full procedure may take between 15-45 minutes. Often at least 2-3 treatments are advised to start to see results. It is often recommended that treatments be done at least once a year after the initial group of treatments to continue regeneration and maintain or enhance the results.  Risks of PRP include, pain at the injection site, bleeding, bruising and/or infection as with any type of injection, short lasting pinkness/redness (flushing) of the skin, allergic reaction to the solution, and/or topical anesthetic, injury to a nerve and/or muscle as with any type of injection, itching and swelling at the injection site(s), and minimal or no effect from the treatment The risk of an allergic reaction is small. PRP has been shown to have tissue regenerating effects. In general, PRP has a short recovery time and no general anesthesia is required.
