Eczema (Atopic Dermatitis)
Eczema, also called atopic dermatitis, is a chronic skin condition affecting 10–20% of children and 1–3% of adults in the U.S. The skin becomes sensitive and easily irritated by allergens and environmental triggers. Eczema is often described as the “itch that rashes” because scratching can cause redness, scaling, and thickening over time. Commonly affected areas include the face in infants and the inner elbows or knees in older children.

Most patients experience symptoms early in life, with nearly 90% showing signs by age 5. Eczema may occur alongside hay fever or asthma and is thought to be a familial, chronic condition. It is not contagious.

The exact cause of eczema is unknown, but it may involve an overactive immune response to common environmental triggers. While some cases improve with age, proper care is key. Prevention includes avoiding allergens and maintaining a consistent skin care routine. If over-the-counter moisturizers are not enough, seeing a dermatologist is essential for effective treatment.
