Actinic Keratosis (AKs)
Actinic Keratosis (AKs) are dry, scaly patches that develop on sun-exposed areas such as the scalp, face, forearms, and backs of hands. Most people with one AK lesion will develop multiple over time. They may occasionally itch or become tender, especially after sun exposure. AKs are most common in adults over 40 with fair skin and hair and a history of prolonged sun exposure.
Because AKs are considered precancerous, they can progress to squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) if untreated. In fact, 40–60% of squamous cell skin cancers begin as untreated AKs. Early detection and treatment are essential. Regular skin self-exams and dermatologist visits help reduce risk.
