Patch Testing
Allergic contact dermatitis occurs when typically harmless substances trigger an immune reaction upon skin contact. For patients with chronic dermatitis (eczema) that doesn’t respond to standard treatments, patch testing can help identify specific triggers. At Myers Dermatology, we provide expert patch testing for both adults and children.
Common Symptoms Include:
-
Redness
-
Blistering
-
Fissures
-
Itching
-
Hives
-
Burning sensation
These symptoms can last for weeks, but treatments at home using medications and topical creams often help. Identifying triggers is the most effective way to prevent flare-ups.
Our Comprehensive Patch Testing
While many dermatologists use the TRUE Test (28 chemicals), Myers Dermatology offers an expanded North American Series, testing up to 70 allergens known to cause rashes in North America. This detailed approach provides valuable insight for patients struggling with allergic contact dermatitis.
The Patch Testing Procedure:
-
Patches containing potential allergens are taped to the back for 48 hours.
-
Patients must keep the area dry, taking only sponge baths and avoiding excessive sweating.
-
After 48 hours, an initial reading is taken, followed by a final reading 24–48 hours later.
-
Positive reactions are rated from negative to extreme, guiding personalized recommendations.
Preparation & Care:
-
Avoid oral and topical corticosteroids in the test area
-
Avoid oral antihistamines
-
Avoid sun exposure on the test area for at least 3 weeks
After the test, our team provides detailed instructions on how to avoid triggers and prevent future flare-ups.
